Dish Network is realigning its executive team, first tapping Erik Carlson as its new president and COO.

Charlie Ergen will remain chairman and CEO in Dish’s new executive structure, stepping down as president and moving around the executive team “to more fully respond to the dynamic pay-TV environment.”

Carlson has been with Dish for more than 20 years, most recently as its EVP of operations. In his new role, he will be responsible for programming, marketing, media sales, technology and customer acquisition. Ergen says he was chosen because “He has a clear vision for how Dish will deliver the best customer experience and claim share in our category.”

Bernie Han, previously EVP and COO at Dish, will transition to the company’s EVP of strategic planning, reporting to Ergen. Warren Schlichting, who had served as SVP of programming and media sales was promoted to EVP of marketing, programming and media sales.

Sling TV will continue on as a separate division within Dish Network, with its CEO Roger Lynch still reporting to Ergen.

Brief Take: Some analysts take this as a sign that Dish may move away from its core business and focus more on its Sling TV service. The transition could put Dish in a safer position in the pay-TV environment as more and more subscribers walk away.
