Premium channel EPIX is live-streaming the Wednesday world premiere of its controversial college sports doc “Schooled: The Price of College Sports” for free, the channel announced Tuesday.

The doc will be available via a link of the EPIX website, while subscribers will have the additional option of watching via VOD and EPIX streaming apps.

The EPIX-produced “Schooled” tackles the touchy subject of the business of college sports and the treatment of student athletes. “Schooled” is based on a 2011 article from Pulitzer Prize winning historian Taylor Branch. The doc features interviews with several former college athletes who discuss taking illegal payments to pay rent and buy food, even though they were playing for football and basketball programs that garnered millions of dollars for universities and staff.

“Schooled” premieres Wednesday, Oct. 18, at 8pm ET.

Brief Take: EPIX is betting that offering such a newsworthy program for free could attract eyeballs and subscribers to the premium network.
