Fox shuns next-day ratings, but maybe not when they are as good as Empire’s, which came roaring back for its spring return.
In Nielsen’s final national ratings on Thursday, Empire scored a 4.8 rating/15 share among adults 18-49 and 12.45 million total viewers. That’s the highest demo rating this year for any broadcast telecast airing in its regular time slot, reports Variety.
Empire’s score has only been topped in 2016 by AMC’s The Walking Dead, which averages around a 6.0 among adults 18-49, and the post-NFC Championship premiere of The X-Files on Sunday, January 24, which garnered a 5.1 among adults 18-49 and 13.5 million viewers. That number climbed to 20 million when three-day viewing was added.
That also matches the show’s top demographic score for its final seven episodes last fall and it’s the largest total viewer count since season two’s third episode on Oct. 7, when the show hit 13.1 million viewers. That high demo rating for comparatively few viewers also indicates how strong the urban drama is among the younger viewers that advertisers covet.
Empire is one of the few shows to avoid a mid-season plunge, with many shows that went on hiatus returning to far fewer viewers.
