The simple pencil takes center stage in Elastic Creative Director Hazel Baird’s main titles for Apple TV Plus’ Lessons in Chemistry. Baird is also the creative force behind Apple TV Plus’ celebrated main titles for The Morning Show.

As readers of the best-selling novel by Bonnie Garmus know, the pencil plays a big role in the story as it’s a frequently used tool of protagonist Elizabeth Zott, played by Oscar winner Brie Larson.

In the story, Zott is a quirky and introverted chemist working in a very male-dominated field in the 1950s. Chemistry is her passion and her pursuit and she channels that love into cooking delicious and healthy food in her off hours. Although she’s very reserved and prickly, she manages to forge a relationship with her fellow brilliant chemist, Calvin Evans. She also adopts an adorable dog that she names 6:30 because that’s the time he wakes her up.

Besides Larson, the limited series stars Lewis Pullman as Evans. It also stars Aja Naomi King, Stephanie Koenig, Patrick Walker, Kevin Sussman, Derek Cecil and Beau Bridges.

Lessons in Chemistry is executive produced by Lee Eisenburg, who also showruns and writes, along with Larson, Jason Bateman, Susannah Grant, Michael Costigan, Natalie Sandy and Louise Shore.

Lessons in Chemistry premiered its first two episodes on Friday, October 13 on Apple TV Plus. Additional episodes are dropping each Friday through November 24.
