The 13.5 million viewers who watched the series premiere of CBS’ “Under the Dome” easily jumps to more than 20 million when taking into account numbers from recorded viewing, VOD and online streaming.
Because of this, CBS has decided to periodically release numbers that it feels represent the true impact of their shows like “Under the Dome” across multiple platforms.
This series premiere specifically spiked in DVR playback, with Live +7 ratings added more than 4 million viewers. VOD within 22 days added another 1.6 million, and streaming on CBS.com, and its sites through partnerships added another 500,000. And this doesn’t even include Amazon’s instant video service, who went on record saying that “Dome” was the most-watched TV premiere in its history.
Brief Take: This is one more piece of research that proves that traditional daily and weekly TV ratings no longer tell the whole story, and a more complex and inclusive system is needed as we move forward in a multi-platform, TV Everywhere world.
