Tackling the same historical topic that’s currently the subject of Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World, FX’s Trust tells a different version of the story of the obscenely wealthy Getty family, the patriarch who was hard-pressed to part with a penny and the grandson who was kidnapped in 1973.
Donald Sutherland plays John Paul Getty, the same role for which Christopher Plummer replaced Kevin Spacey in Scott’s film. Getty is willing to finance a huge estate in the English countryside, several mistresses and even a lion, but will not fork out any ransom for the return of his wayward grandson, J. Paul Getty III (Harris Dickinson). Michael Esper and Hilary Swank play Paul’s parents, J. Paul Getty Jr. and Gail. Unlike his grandfather, Gail is willing to negotiate with her son’s kidnappers but also unlike his grandfather, she has no money.
Trust plans to tell the story of the Getty family over several seasons and span the 20th Century.
The cast also includes Brendan Fraser, Anna Chancellor, Norbert Leo Butz, Charlotte Riley and Luca Marinelli. Trust is created by Simon Beaufoy and executive produced by Danny Boyle, Beaufoy and Christian Colson, with Boyle directing the first three episodes. The show is produced by FX Productions, Cloud Eight Films, Decibal Films and Snicket Films Limited.
Fittingly, the above promo is set to Pink Floyd’s “Money,” marking the first time the song has ever been licensed for promotional use. FX worked with creative agency Motive on the trailer.
Trust premieres Sunday, March 25 at 10 pm ET/PT on FX.
