Disney Plus plans to roll out an ad-supported subscription tier later this year, with plans to make that tier available internationally in 2023.
“Expanding access to Disney Plus to a broader audience at a lower price point is a win for everyone—consumers, advertisers, and our storytellers,” said Kareem Daniel, chairman, Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution, in a statement. “More consumers will be able to access our amazing content. Advertisers will be able to reach a wider audience, and our storytellers will be able to share their incredible work with more fans and families.”

Part of the reason for doing this is advertiser demand, as well as customer demand.
“Since its launch, advertisers have been clamoring for the opportunity to be part of Disney Plus and not just because there’s a growing demand for more streaming inventory,” said Rita Ferro, president, advertising, Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution, also in a statement. “Disney Plus with advertising will offer marketers the most premium environment in streaming with our most beloved brands, Disney, Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel and National Geographic. I can’t wait to share more with advertisers at the Upfront.”
Adding the ad-supported tier is part of Disney’s plan of acquiring 230 to 260 million global Disney Plus subscribers by fiscal year 2024. While the new tier will cost less than the current premium tier without advertising, it does not appear that it will be free of charge.
Disney will announce more details about the new tier, including launch date and pricing, in the coming weeks, it said.
