​As part of their new carriage deal with Time Warner and Bright House Networks, Discovery Communications has granted TV Everywhere rights over a 10-year period, Deadline reported Monday.

Subscribers should be able to stream Discovery content “in the near future” the site said.

Financial Editor David Lieberman characterized the deal as a “surprise” because “Discovery has been slow to grant streaming rights to its programming, waiting to see how much extra distributors would be willing to pay — and when Nielsen would begin to measure viewing on iPads and other mobile devices.”

Brief Take: With time-shifting becoming more popular by the day, it’s a fact of life that networks can no longer hold back on granting TV Everywhere rights for their content.
