Fans of Disney Channel’s latest TV movie franchise, Descendants (and there are legions), saw their wishes granted when the network announced during a programing event for Disney’s Zombies that the latest chapter would air in 2019.
“By adding a modern twist to Disney’s most treasured heritage properties, the world of Descendants has become an instant classic,” said Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, in a statement. “We’re thrilled that the creative team that conceived and launched this global phenomenon is back to dive deeper into these characters and the imaginative world from which they come.”
Descendants 2 has reached more than 71.5 million total viewers across 159 countries and 32 languages. Music videos from Descendants and Descendants 2 have nearly two billion global views and the Descendants 2 soundtrack climbed to number one on iTunes and to the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 chart.
In the interstitial (above), viewers saw Mal (Dove Cameron) walking through a dark forest, where she is surprised to come upon communication from her previously unseen father. Mal is the daughter of Maleficent, and her father promises to be a new villain in the series. The closing screen promises Descendants 3 in summer 2019.
Descendants tells the stories of the teenage progeny of some of Disney’s most scary (and fun) villains. Besides Maleficent, those include the Evil Queen, Jafar and Cruella De Vil.
Besides Cameron, also starring are Cameron Boyce, Sofia Carson, Booboo Stewart, Mitchell Hope and China Anne McClain.
Kenny Ortega, who has been involved with both Descendants and High School Musical is the director, executive producer and choreographer. Sara Parriott and Josann McGibbon will write also serve as executive producers.
Production on the third installment starts this summer in Vancouver, Canada.
