Death is no longer permanent in Netflix’s upcoming futuristic drama Altered Carbon.
Consciousness can be digitized and human bodies are interchangeable in a story of murder, love, sex and betrayal that’s based on the classic cyberpunk noir novel by Richard K. Morgan.
The streamer released first look photos (above) for the upcoming show, along with a date announcement teaser of an ad for Psychasec, the company that allows people’s’ minds to be transferred to different bodies, allowing them to essentially live forever.
Set more than 300 years in the future, society has been transformed by the new technology.
The series follows Takeshi Kovacs (Jeol Kinnaman, The Killing) the lone surviving soldier in a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned, “on ice,” for centuries until Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy), an impossibly wealthy, long-lived man, offers Kovacs the chance to live again. In exchange, Kovacs has to solve a murder … that of Bancroft himself. As the investigation progresses, Kovacs comes to learn that his past isn’t nearly as buried as he thought.
Martha Higareda also stars as Kristin Ortega, a lieutenant who is following int he footsteps of her father, a police officer who died in the line of duty.
Altered Carbon is produced by Skydance Television, with David Ellison, Dana Goldbert and Marcy Ross serving as exectuive producers along with Steve Blackman and Mythology Entertainment partners Brad Fischer and James Vanderbilt. The first episode is directed by Game of Throne‘s Miguel Sapochnik.
The series premieres February 2 on Netflix.
