If anyone can help Sunday’s Daytime Emmy Awards erase last year’s hot mess of a show from the nation’s collective memory, it’s daytime superfans—with an assist from Luke and Laura (maybe).
In what’s being billed as a “special tribute to the fans of daytime television,” NATAS and Pop announced Wednesday that this weekend’s ceremony will feature tributes to notable TV moments as voted on by fans, including Most Romantic Duo, Favorite Daytime Hottie, and Favorite Talk Show Audience.
Oh, and fans can also expect surprises and star appearances, including “a reunion of two soap star legends.”
Cue the Luke and Laura speculation.
For those who were living under a rock in 1981—or are too young to remember—some backstory: L&L are the legendary supercouple from General Hospital who would be the most logical go-to if you were a daytime awards show producer looking for a stunt big enough to make everyone forget wildly inappropriate red carpet antics by unqualified hosts.
After all, their fictional wedding on November 17, 1981 nabbed 30 million viewers for NBC, and remains the highest rated soap opera episode in American daytime history. Elizabeth Taylor herself made a cameo, and the duo landed on the covers of both People and Newsweek.
Of course, if L&L are going to surprise fans during the live telecast this Sunday from the Warner Bros. backlot, Pop and NATAS ain’t talking.
The Channel Formerly Known as TV Guide Network is also using the Daytime Emmys to help launch its new reality series Queens of Drama, which debuts immediately after the telecast. Stars Donna Mills, Lindsay Hartley, Crystal Hunt, and Chystee Pharris are slated to present that night.
The hosts of top-rated morning chatfest The Talk were also revealed as presenters on Wednesday. CBS also announced that The Talk is turning their Monday show into an after-party of sorts, with the night’s big winners and other special guests stopping by. Pop is a joint venture between CBS and Lionsgate.
Other presenters announced Wednesday include Tom Bergeron, Eileen Davidson, Leeza Gibbons, and Mario Lopez.
The 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards air live Sunday, April 26 at 8pm ET/5pm PT on Pop.
