South African comedian Trevor Noah finally has a start date for his new gig – he will officially take over for Jon Stewart at The Daily Show on Monday, Sept. 28.
Noah appeared on a brief Comedy Central spot Thursday, trying out what could be a “new and sexy Daily Show.”
Noah has contributed to pieces on The Daily Show only a handful of times, and though he is relatively unknown in the U.S., he hosted his own late-night show Tonight with Trevor Noah and has hosted several awards show in South Africa as well as the South African Comedy Festival.
He also released a comedy special in 2013, Trevor Noah: African American, and was the subject of a documentary in 2012 called You Laugh But It’s True, chronicling the comic’s career in post-apartheid South Africa.
Noah was announced as Stewart’s successor in March, which followed a social media outcry over the comedian because of old tweets some called sexist and offensive. Comedy Central stood by Noah, releasing the following statement:
“Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included. To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central.”
Stewart’s last day on the show is Aug. 6, so Comedy Central will have a little under two months to fill in his absence.

Brief Take: September is a big month for late night. Noah’s start date follows former Daily Show star Stephen Colbert, who will officially take his place at CBS’ Late Show on Sept. 8.
