Crackle’s Emmy-nominated stop-motion animated series SuperMansion will release a Christmas special ahead of the second season launch in early 2017.
SuperMansion: War on Christmas will be released December 8 on Crackle, Sony’s web TV service that offers movies, TV shows and original web shows to stream for free with commercials. The special features a “bent and twisted Santa” according to Gary Anthony Williams, who voices Santa Claus.
The creators and voice cast of the animated comedy series following the adventures of aging superhero Titanium Rex, voiced by Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston, and his team of feckless sidekicks known as The League of Freedom, gave fans a sneak peek into the second season at New York Comic-Con on Sunday.
“We just learned a lot about the characters in the first season, what makes them funny, so in the second we follow them a little more on their journey,” said Zeb Wells, co-creator and the voice of “Jewbot.”
“We keep the big story going but there’s a lot of crazy episodes as well. The league goes to college in one episode,” Wells added. “We have a sort of days of future past episode—that’s a lot of fun.”
“We like to look at the villains a little bit and explore their relationships,” shared co-creator Matthew Senreich. “The first season was all about the heroes, this season we spend a little more time with the villains.”
Wells revealed that the second season will follow the gang of villains as they search for a new lair. They end up in an ignominious location next to an Arby’s.
Breckin Meyer joins the voice cast in the second season, voicing the characters Reggie and Johnny Scanlon. The Big Bang Theory‘s Jim Parsons also will be featured as a guest star in the Christmas special.
Chris Pine returns in a number of guest spots during the second season. Pine was nominated for an Emmy in 2016 for his work on the show voicing Robo-Dino and Dr. Deviso.
“You cannot tell that’s Chris Pine! There’s nothing you can do in your head to think that’s Chris Pine,” Keegan-Michael Key, who voices American Ranger and Sgt. Agony, said of Pine’s voice work on the show. Key was also nominated for an Emmy for his work on the show last year.
Creator Zeb Wells revealed to the audience how he avoids going “too far” in a comedy series known for bawdy humor that frequently crosses the line.
“Every once in a while you’ll get into the booth and suddenly a wave of shame will hit you when you realize an actor is going to have to say something that you wrote,” admitted Wells.
“And there are times…when you say ‘you know, maybe we won’t say that,’” he added. “It is fun to walk up to the line but sometimes you do go over and sometimes you need to hear it read out loud [to realize that].”
