​Fox’s ambitious new space series “Cosmos” lifted off to 8.5 million viewers in the U.S. Sunday night, with the network projecting 40 million viewers worldwide once the series bows in other markets throughout the week.

Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey” premiered simultaneously across 10 U.S. networks on Sunday, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

Fox, National Geographic Channel, FX, FXX, FXM, Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2, Nat Geo Wild, Nat Geo Mundo and Fox Life in the U.S. as well as 220 Fox International and National Geographic Channels in 181 countries premiered the series.

The show’s overall footprint will eventually be more than half a billion homes.

Viewers in select cities got a special preview of the show last week at planetariums and science centers.
