San Diego-based IDW comics is looking to cash in on Hollywood’s growing appetite for all things supernatural and superhero by launching a TV division, the company announced Thursday.

The newly-formed IDW Entertainment will be led by former Starz Media exec David Ozer, and will be based in the L.A. offices of production company Circle of Confusion, one of the producers of the smash zombie hit “The Walking Dead” on AMC.

Circle of Confusion producer Rick Jacobs will serve as Chief Creative Officer of the new TV shop.

IDW already publishes a long list of comic books based on TV programs, but the new endeavor is going to focus on bringing their stable of supernatural comics to the small screen.

The move seems to emulate the path trod by another comic book company, Marvel, whose Marvel Studios is now responsible for some of the most successful and lucrative films and television programs in the marketplace. ABC’s “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” continues to be one of the winners of the fall broadcast premiere lineup.

IDW, founded in 1999, if the world’s fourth-largest comic book publisher.
