Comedy Central has pulled the plug on Larry Wilmore’s The Nightly Show, which took the place of The Colbert Report in February 2015. The Nightly Show’s last episode will air this Thursday, Aug. 18. Chris Hardwick’s @Midnight will temporarily replace the show, although it will air at 11:30 pm ET, not at midnight as the name might suggest.

“Unfortunately, it hasn’t connected with our audience in ways that we need it to,” Comedy Central President Kent Alterman told The Hollywood Reporter, “both in the linear channel and in terms of multiplatform outlets and with shareable content and on social platforms as well.”

The show, which was facing contract renewals for Wilmore and several crew members, was only averaging a 0.2 rating among its key demographic of adults 18-49.

“I’m really grateful to Comedy Central, Jon Stewart, and our fans to have had this opportunity,” said Wilmore in a statement. “I’m also saddened and surprised we won’t be covering this crazy election or ‘The Unblackening’ as we’ve coined it.”

Wilmore has been affiliated with Comedy Central for a decade, appearing for years on Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show as the senior black correspondent. He was slated to depart the network with The Daily Show’s transition from Stewart to Trevor Noah and become the showrunner on ABC’s Black-ish, on which he remains an executive producer. Instead, he decided to give hosting The Nightly Show a shot.

Wilmore, who was an executive producer on Fox’s Malcolm in the Middle and Bernie Mac, has another comedy in the works with HBO’s Insecure starring Issa Rae.
