The character Stephen Colbert will make his last TV appearance on Thursday, Dec. 18, he announced Thursday night, so that the real Stephen Colbert can prepare for his Late Show debut next year on CBS.
Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, which originally premiered October 2005, will end its run this December but will be replaced on the schedule by The Minority Report with Larry Wilmore, though no start date has been set yet. Colbert will take over for David Letterman on CBS sometime next year, but no firm date has been announced.
Colbert announced the end date on his show Thursday night: “Stephen Colbert, the guy you’ve seen here every night for nine years will be gone.” Watch the video below:
