Chris Spencer has been named executive vice president, creative, at National Geographic Partners, said CMO Jill Cress and National Geographic Global Networks CEO Courteney Monroe on Monday.
Spencer, who hails from New Zealand, will report to Cress in the newly created position and oversee the premium marketing creative strategy and execution for the entire NGP portfolio.
“National Geographic is on an exciting journey to reinvigorate this beloved global brand. Chris’s vast experience in marketing in the premium content space — particularly in the scripted or dramatic series space — will elevate the creative vision and expression across NGP,” said Cress in a statement. “I am thrilled to have him lead our incredibly talented team as we continue to push ourselves further to deliver on the ambition of our unrivaled purpose-driven media company.”
Spencer spent decades at HBO, where he oversaw campaigns for such ground-breaking shows as Sex and the City, Game of Thrones, The Sopranos and many other series. Spencer also has co-directed numerous short documentaries and one feature film.
National Geographic has been adding scripted series to its roster, including the scripted/documentary hybrid Mars, which will return for a second season, and limited series Genius, which was nominated for 10 Emmys and will premiere another season focusing on artist Pablo Picasso. Nat Geo also has a feature documentary, Jane, coming up.
