Rebooting old series is old hat these days, but what hasn’t been done is having actors create new voiceovers for old foreign series.
That’s what Amazon Prime Video is sort of doing with Comrade Detective, a True Detective-style series that was allegedly popular in Cold War-era Romania (or just made last year for the purposes of this satire).
It’s a complicated but fun concept, with Channing Tatum providing the voice of Detective Gregor Anghel played by real Romanian actor Florin Piersic, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt voices his partner, Joseph Baciu played Corneliu Ulici. Nick Offerman, Jenny Sate, Jake Johnson, Fred Armisen, Kim Basinger, Mahershala Ali, Bobby Cannavale and many more also chime in.
The six-episode series is produced by Amazon Studios and A24, with creators Brian Gatewood and Alex Tanaka executive producing and Documentary Now‘s Rhys Thomas directing and executive producing. Tatum, Reid Carolin, Peter Kiernan and Andrew Schneider also executive produce along with Ravi Nandan and John Hodges.
Comrade Detective drops on Amazon Prime Video on Aug. 4.
