CBS’ summer programming lineup kicks off Monday with the two-night season premiere of “Big Brother.” Here’s a look at how the Eye Network is promoting some of this summer’s most anticipated shows.

“Under The Dome”
Premieres June 30, 10:00pm

“Under the Dome: Inside Chester’s Mill” recap special
Airs June 23, 10:00pm

CBS hit on one of the most effective promos in recent memory for Season 1 of “Under the Dome,” with a wonderfully cryptic Super Bowl spot that simply directed viewers to the show’s official website. There, they could enter their address and get a glimpse of their own neighborhood “under the dome.”

The network doesn’t seem to have anything quite like that up its sleeve for Season 2, but then it really doesn’t need to either. “Under the Dome” was a massive hit in the US and abroad, with an intricate storyline that kept the same average number of viewers hooked across all 13 episodes. That’s the kind of repeat business everyone is looking for.

To bring in new viewers who need a crash course in “Under the Dome’s” intricate storylines, CBS will air an hour-long Season 1 recap special, “Under the Dome: Inside Chester’s Mill” in advance of the Season 2 premiere.

And to stoke the fires of the series’ already large fan base, CBS has focused on a lot of behind-the-scenes type content in promos, even incorporating documentary-style interviews with executive producers Brian K. Vaughan and Neil Baer. It also plays up the Stephen King effect, making sure to let viewers know the famous author – and writer of the novel on which the show is based – wrote the first episode of Season 2 (though they don’t let him talk in the promo, possibly because he looks and sounds like one of the creepy baddies populating his dozens of books).

CBS is also doing some fun stuff in the social space, primarily with some clips of cast members reading scenes straight out of their scripts from upcoming episodes. It’s kind of cool to hear the on-screen story in its rawest form, even though it’s hard to imagine anyone really caring beyond the most diehard of fans.

Extant – Premiere July 9, 9:00pm

Like “Under the Dome” but for slightly different reasons, “Extant” is almost guaranteed to be a hit thanks to the huge names attached to it – namely, star Halle Berry and executive producer Steven Spielberg.

The word “extant” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue and nobody knows what it means. What’s more, CBS doesn’t seem to care, which is part of the fun. The promos for “Extant” have been intentionally vague, a vibe that also extends onto its Facebook page, where mysterious statements arrive unannounced and unexplained, such as “A machine can be programmed to think, but can it be programmed to feel?” and “Is biology being replaced with technology?”

So far, we know the main character arrives home from a cosmic voyage inexplicably pregnant and that robot kids aren’t a weird thing. That plus Halle Berry in a space suit is really all you need for an effective promotional campaign. Star power, baby.

Big Brother – Premiere June 25, 8:00pm

It’s hard to believe the US version of “Big Brother” hit the scene all the way back in 2000, long before Netflix was streaming original series and everyone was watching shows on demand on their iPads. Even harder to believe: “Big Brother” is stronger than ever thanks to the rise of interactivity and multiplatform viewing.

“We saw tremendous growth in engagement around the interactive and multiplatform elements we launched last year – including triple-digit growth in engagement around the fan-driven Impact Votes,” said Rob Gelick, SVP and GM of digital platforms for CBS Interactive Entertainment. “Our goal this season is to give fans even more access and ways to affect the “Big Brother” house.”

Those initiatives include a “Big Brother Live Kickoff” hour-long special airing on CBS.com prior to the June 25 East Coast on-air premiere; an update to the CBS.com Live Feeds subscription service that includes exclusive voting opportunities and a “Houseguest Tracker”; and an “All-Nighter” Twitter event following the second night of the premiere on June 26 wherein host Jeff Schroeder will live-tweet the following 16 hours after the episode.

It’s all in the service of a season that, according to the promos, will feature “Twist after Twisted Twist.” Even the house itself is twisty, a whimsical urban tree house-themed dwelling with earthy elements woven together to create a seamless array of nooks and crannies.

“Reckless”
Premieres June 29, 9:00pm

Mostly, the promos for CBS’ latest foray into legal drama territory have lived up to its titillating description at CBS.com: “A sultry legal drama set in Charleston, S.C., where a gorgeous Yankee litigator and a charming southern attorney must hide their intense mutual attraction as a police sex scandal threatens to tear the city apart.” Like this spot, which succinctly lays out those story elements with some well-selected steamy footage. Even with the baffling addition of a snake (perhaps it plays into the plot somehow?) the message is clear: Sexual tension is the name of the game here.

But then CBS also recently released this promo, which frames “Reckless” as the tender, softly lit saga of earnest, hard-working lawyers who just want to make a difference…
