Paramount-owned CBS is bringing back its ‘80s franchise, the Saturday Night Movie, for one night only on May 14. The network will broadcast Top Gun, 1986’s top-grossing movie, in advance of Paramount Pictures’ long-awaited sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. The movie also will be streamed live for subscribers of streaming service Paramount Plus Premium and on demand on Paramount Plus and other tiers.

The move is in advance of Paramount’s theatrical release of Top Gun: Maverick on May 27. The movie’s release has been delayed several times – first, due to production issues and then, due to the pandemic. It will finally premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18, marking Cruise’s first appearance in Cannes since 1992 when he starred in Ron Howard’s Far and Away. While there, Cruise will participate in a panel discussion about the movie as well as a retrospective on his career.

Top Gun: Maverick also stars Val Kilmer, reprising his role as Iceman, who apparently climbed all the way to admiral. Miles Teller plays Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, son of Maverick’s late flight partner, Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, a.k.a. “Goose” (Anthony Edwards). Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm and Glen Powell also star.

In the sequel, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) has spent the past 30 years as a test pilot and has been recruited – somewhat unwillingly – to train Top Gun graduates for a special mission. When he encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Teller), son of his late friend Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, a.k.a. “Goose” (Anthony Edwards), Maverick must confront his own deepest fears.
