CBS on Monday gave full-season orders to three new series: Bull, Kevin Can Wait and MacGyver.
“We’re thrilled viewers have embraced these three shows creatively,” said Glenn Geller, president, CBS Entertainment, in a statement. “Each one has made an immediate and positive impact on our schedule, while significantly contributing to growing their respective nights.”
Bull, starring NCIS’ Michael Weatherly and based on the life of Dr. Phil McGraw, is the most-watched new series of this season, averaging 17.32 million viewers, a 2.6 rating/9 share among adults 18-49 and a 3.8/11 among adults 25-54, according to CBS. Compared to last year at this time, Bull is improving its year-ago Tuesday 9 p.m. time period by 18 percent among viewers, 24 percent among adults 18-49 and 23 percent among adults 25-54. Bull has the advantage of leading out of NCIS, which still averages nearly 20 million viewers in Nielsen Media Research’s live-plus-seven ratings.
Kevin Can Wait, starring Kevin James in his return to network TV, is averaging 11.26 million viewers, a 2.8/9 among adults 18-49 and a 4.0/11 among adults 25-54. Compared to last year’s Monday 8:30 p.m. time slot, Kevin Can Wait is up 10 percent in viewers, 17 percent in adults 18-49 and 14 percent in adults 25-54. Kevin Can Wait is currently benefitting from its lead-in — TV’s most-watched scripted series The Big Bang Theory, which will move back to Thursdays at 8 p.m. once CBS’ Thursday Night Football comes to a close. Kevin Can Wait will then be tasked with opening CBS’ Monday night at 8 p.m.
Finally, MacGyver, which is Friday night’s top new program, is averaging 11.35 million viewers, a 1.9/8 among adults 18-49 and a 2.7/10 among adults 25-54. Compared to last year on Friday at 8 p.m., the show is up 55 percent among viewers, 12 percent among adults 18-49 and 17 percent among adults 25-54. MacGyver stars Lucas Till and George Eads.
Those three series join full-season pick-ups at other networks. NBC has already ordered five more episodes of this fall’s top rookie This Is Us and gave a full season order to comedy Superstore, starring America Ferrera and Ben Feldman.
ABC has picked up Designated Survivor, starring Kiefer Sutherland, and Speechless, starring Minnie Driver, while Fox has ordered an entire season of Lethal Weapon.
