CBS Television Studios is launching a new unscripted department, and bringing back Ghen Maynard, the executive behind successful shows such as Survivor, Big Brother and The Amazing Race, to spearhead it.

Maynard will serve in the newly-created position of senior executive vice president, alternative programming, where he’ll work with producers across the industry to create and develop unscripted content for all CBS broadcast and cable networks, streaming services and digital platforms.

He will report to CBS Television Studios President David Stapf.

“We’re thrilled to have Ghen return to CBS to help build our studio’s alternative department,” Stapf said in a statement. “Ghen has an outstanding track record in the unscripted arena, having developed some of reality television’s biggest hits. His creative instincts and strong relationships within the alternative community will be key as we grow our roster of unscripted hits and new formats.”

Currently on the unscripted front, CBS’ roster includes the Carpool Karaoke television series for Apple Music, based on The Late Late Show with James Corden segment that rose to viral fame, as well as Drop the Mic for TBS, also based on a segment from the same show.

Maynard said he’s excited to help grow CBS’ unscripted programming.

“I am very grateful to both Les [Moonves] and David for the opportunity to build this exciting new venture at my old home, where I will get to work again with so many good friends,” he said in a statement.

Maynard worked at CBS from 2000 to 2004, where he developed and launched four of reality television’s longest-running hits: Survivor, still going strong after 16 years; the U.S. version of the franchise Big Brother; the 15-time Emmy Award-winning The Amazing Race; and America’s Next Top Model.

After leaving CBS, Maynard moved on to executive vice president, primetime development at NBC Entertainment from 2004-2006, where he and his team developed series such as My Name is Earl and Heroes. He also served as executive vice president, alternative programming and entertainment content for new media for the CBS Paramount Network Television Group from 2006-2008.

Most recently, he’s independently sold, produced pilots and series, and consulted on projects at several networks and production companies, including AMC, CBS, The CW, TNT and UPtv.
