CBS is adding three new original series to its streaming on demand service, CBS All Access, said Marc DeBevoise, president and chief operating officer of CBS Interactive at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Tuesday. Strange Angel, No Activity and $1 will join The Good Wife spin-off The Good Fight and Star Trek: Discovery, slated to premiere next month.
Strange Angel is a drama created by Mark Heyman and based on George Pendle’s book of the same name. the story follows the double life of Jack Parsons, a rocket scientist who lived in 1940s Los Angeles. By day, Parsons helped birth American rocketry while by night he performed so-called sex magick rituals and was a disciple to famed occultist Aleister Crowley.
Strange Angel is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Scott Free Productions. Heyman, David DiGilio, Ridley Scott and David W. Zucker will serve as executive producers; Clayton Krueger will be co-executive producer, and David Lowery will direct and executive produce.
No Activity will be the service’s first comedy, and it comes from Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Funny Or Die. The series, which will air between the two first-season installments of Star Trek: Discovery, follows two low-level cops, two criminals, two dispatch workers and two Mexican tunnelers. The show is based on an Australian series produced by Jungle and broadcast by Australian SVOD service Stan. Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Patrick Brammall, Trent O’Donnell, Jason Burrows and Joe Farrell will serve as executive producers.
$1 is a mystery thriller set in a small Rust Belt town in post-recession America. A one-dollar bill keeps changing hands, connecting a group of characters involved in multiple murders. The series will be produced by CBS Television Studios. It’s created by Jason Mosberg. Matt DeRoss and Alexandre Dauman will serve as executive producers, while Craig Zobel will direct and executive produce.
CBS All Access also will premiere Star Trek: Discovery on CBS on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 8:30 p.m. ET after NFL football and 60 Minutes. The series’ second episode will be available exclusively on CBS All Access immediately after the first episode premieres, and then weekly after that through Sunday, Nov. 5. The second chapter will resume in January 2018.
The service released the key art (below) on Tuesday, with main characters each getting their own custom take.
