The same week as a new suit was filed against Aereo in Utah, broadcasters have told Variety that they also plan to petition the US Supreme Court to review prior court rulings allowing Aereo to continue its service.

According to Variety, the petition has a deadline of Oct. 15. Fox and other media companies currently in cases against Aereo stated this summer that their next step might be forcing the issue to the Supreme Court. The court will decide whether to hear the case or wait for current lawsuits to settle.

Aereo has been streaming broadcast signals via antennas for more than a year now, currently available in seven cities. Broadcast companies like Fox, ABC, CBS and NBC claim it violates copyright law and continue to fight to find a court that will shut down the startup.

Brief Take: While lawsuits play out across the country, taking it to the Supreme Court may be broadcasters’ final step in trying to shut down Aereo.
