As part of Rede Record’s 2016 Olympic Games campaign, Brazilian television stars revealed how their favorite sports transformed their lives by fueling their dreams.
Six promos broadcast on air and shared on social media feature celebrities introducing their favorite sports, connecting them to challenges they’ve overcome, while at the same time encouraging current Olympic athletes.
“We wanted to show the public the importance of sports practice,” said Alexandre Barbosa Machado de Souza, Rede’s creative on-air promos coordinator. “Therefore, we decided to do so through Brazilian TV presenters, as these are popular stars truly loved by our audience. In the pieces, we chose to connect the presenters with Olympic disciplines.”
The six stars were selected based on their passionate relationships to the sport they chose to highlight.
Rede Record began by asking the celebrities to answer the question, “What have sports brought to your life?”
Chris Flores, hostess of the Rede Record’s evening show Troca de Família (Trading Spouses), describes how handball taught her teamwork and helped her navigate the entertainment industry. Actress Juliana Didone, who plays Leila in the telenovela Os Dez Mandamentos (The Ten Commandments), credits running with pushing her to surpass her limits.
Each promo starts on the playing field, so in Didone’s case the first shot features a black-and-white track as the actress describes the impact running had on helping her overcome challenges. An orangish-brown animation flows beneath her feet, taking on the tones of a real running track.
When Flores describes how handball helped her organize her work, the scene comes to life in full color, “symbolizing the transition from reality to an Olympic scene,” says Barbosa Machado de Souza.
The animated transformation to reality is particularly powerful when Sabrina Sato, hostess of Programa da Sabrina, describes how boxing increased her self-esteem and helped her stand out and find herself. As she speaks, the floor turns into a dynamic boxing ring with her standing in the center. From boxing she learned that “one day you can fall, but the next day you get up again,” she says, noting she admires athletes for always seeking self-improvement.
“I like encouraging them and putting myself in the place of the family that supports them. I’m sure they will do great because they work really hard,” she says as the promo closes.
Marcos Mion, actor and host of Legendários, said he believes Brazil is evolving, and he talked about how basketball has changed his own personality by teaching him to compete not only to win but also to lose; to work in a team; to delegate; to validate the other players; and to trust his teammates and those by his side.
Renata Alves, hostess of Hoje em Dia, roots for Brazilian swimmers every inch of the way, and says she is a fan of the sport because it demands concentration, courage, accuracy and determination.
Rodrigo Faro, host of Hora do Faro, identifies himself with soccer because he likes its discipline and the fact that the players chase a dream together—since he believes you cannot get anywhere on your own. He says during these Olympic Games he will be more focused than ever.
The promos end with the audio-only tagline En agosto Rio 2016, Jogos Olímpicos, tem que ter Record (In August 2016, the Olympic Games must have Record).
Barbosa Machado de Souza says this campaign—whose stages were built and animated in 3D Max, After Effects and Flame—involved a total of four graphic artists, two editors, two producers, a coordinator and a director, spanning a period of four weeks. “Everyone,” he says, “worked really hard to deliver the pieces on time.”
