“There is no war so hateful to the gods as a war between kin and no war so bloody as a war between dragons,” the ever wise Rhaenys Velaryon (Eve Best) tells her niece, would-be queen Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) in the season-two teaser trailer for HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon.
The trailer picks up where season two left off, just after the death of Rhaenyra’s son, Lucerys and his dragon, Arrax, at the hands of Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and his dragon, the much older and larger Vhagar. After Luke’s death, Rhaenyra fully commits to going to war against the Greens, who are led by the newly crowned King Aegon II, younger half-brother to Rhaenyra, his mother (and Rhaenyra’s step-mother and one-time best friend) Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and Alicent’s father, Otto (Rhys Ifans).
Based on George R. R. Martin’s fictional history of the Targaryen dynasty, “Fire & Blood,” House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and relates how a Targaryen civil war nearly wiped out the world’s dragons.
The series also stars Matt Smith as Rhaenyra’s husband (and uncle) Daemon Targaryen, Steve Toussaint as Rhaenys’ husband Corlys Velaryon and Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole. Also starring are Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney and Sonoya Mizuno. Additional returning cast includes Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall and Matthew Needham.
New cast members for season two are Clinton Liberty as Addam of Hull, Jamie Kenna as Ser Alfred Broome, Kieran Bew as Hugh, Tom Bennett as Ulf, Tom Taylor as Lord Cregan Stark, and Vincent Regan as Ser Rickard Thorne. Previously announced new season two cast includes Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull, Gayle Rankin as Alys Rivers, Freddie Fox as Ser Gwayne Hightower, and Simon Russell Beale as Ser Simon Strong.
House of the Dragon is co-created and executive produced by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal. Sara Hess, Alan Taylor, Melissa Bernstein, Kevin de la Noy, Loni Peristere and Vince Gerardis also executive produce.
HBO released the teaser during its CCXP23 panel in São Paulo, Brazil on Saturday. Season two of House of the Dragon premieres this summer on HBO and will stream on Max.
