Not every show is appropriate for a game experience (though that hasn’t stopped many folks from trying), but “The Voice” most certainly is. Probably the most fun part of watching it, after all, is predicting who will stay and who will go, a simple yet addictive activity that also happens to be easily adaptable to the gaming realm. The BBC demonstrated that fact last spring, when it released The Voice Predictor Game app during Season 2 of “The Voice UK,” in which users could guess which coach’s team a contestant would join as they watched their blind audition in real time.

The latest version of the “Voice UK” app, released last Friday in advance of the Season 3 premiere, stripped that rudimentary game, renamed HomeCoach, down even more. Now, instead of predicting a team for the contestant, players merely decide whether or not they would select the singer at all, based on nothing but the sound of their voice. It’s a rudimentary shift with big implications, giving fans the digital experience of being in the coaches’ chairs.

“The focus of the game has shifted from prediction to opinion,” said Sarah Clay, BBC online commissioning editor, in a statement. “What would you do? How good a coach would you be? We wanted to make the experience feel more social… richer and more immediate.”

Players of the game earn stars when the real coaches turn for the same contestants. Players can also rate the performances, check out other HomeCoach players’ decisions, and compare their scores with friends via Facebook. The BBC has stated the functionality of the game will evolve as the season progresses, ostensibly to keep pace with stages such as the knock out round and the finals.

While no show-related app worth its salt fails to provide on-demand clips, galleries, backstage videos and other content, the “Voice UK” app ups the ante by being the exclusive home for the online-only spinoff series, “The Voice Louder.” Presented by hosts Emma Willis and Marvin Humes, the new short-form catch-up show will feature a summary of the previous episode and funny behind-the-scenes material, and will also feature viewer-submitted pictures, videos and tweets.

The Voice UK app was built by Tellybug and is available for iOS and Android mobile devices.
