The BBC’s massive global marketing onslaught for the “Doctor Who” 50th anniversary seemed to pay off Stateside, with BBC America notching up several records over the weekend, including it’s highest-rated telecast ever.

3.6 million viewers tuned in live or same-day for the global simulcast or its primetime encore, the network said, with 1.2 million viewers in the Adults 25-54 demographic.

“Doctor Who” was the number one television show on Twitter on Saturday and BBC America was the top channel on the platform. Overall the show generated 1.83 million tweets, more than any other show last week.

And the show set new records on Tumblr as well, notching up the highest level of activity for any televised event ever, surpassing the Super Bowl and the MTV Video Music Awards, the network said.

BBC America’s decision to pair the premiere of its new series “Atlantis” with the special seemed to pay off: “Atlantis” scored the highest ratings for the network’s “Supernatural Saturday” programming block, with 838,000 total viewers.

Globally, the 50th anniversary scored a Guinness World Record for the largest ever simulcast of a TV show, with the episode airing in 94 countries on 6 continents.

The Doctor delivered in the download department, too, with the episode hitting #1 on both the iTunes and Amazon charts within 24 hours of release.

BBC America is hoping the interest in the show carries over to the holiday season when the “Doctor Who” Christmas Special airs. The episode is a passing of the baton for the series, with Matt Smith making his final appearance as the Eleventh Doctor and new cast member Peter Capaldi.
