“Dude, nobody’s normal” is good advice in Netflix’s trailer for Atypical, a coming-of-age story about an autistic teenager.
Keir Gilchrist stars as Sam, an 18-year-old on the autistic spectrum who is searching for love. With some help from his friends when it comes to picking up on social signals and how to get the girls, and support from his family as he enters the dating scene, the series is a funny and emotional journey of self discovery.
Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as Sam’s mother, Elsa, who is on a life-changing path as her son gains more independence. The series also stars Michael Rapaport as Sam’s father, Doug, who desires to better connect with and understand his son, and Brigette Lundy-Paine as Sam’s scrappy sister, Casey. Amy Okuda plays his therapist, Julia.
Atypical was created and written by Robia Rashid and Seth Gordon, who serve as executive producers alongside alongside Mary Rohlich, with Leigh as producer.
Michelle Dean, who received her PhD from UCLA and worked at the UCLA Center for Autism and Research and Treatment before joining the faculty of CSU Channel Island, was also brought into the production to help guide an accurate depiction of autism spectrum disorder.
Atypical is produced by Sony Pictures Television for Netflix. The eight, half-hour episodes premiere Friday, August 11.
