In the 1980s, three friends banded together to create one of the most iconic hip-hop groups to date: the Beastie Boys.
Now, the surviving members of the group, Mike Diamond and Adam Horovitz, will tell the intimate, personal story of their band and 40 years of friendship in a live documentary experience, Beastie Boys Story, directed by Spike Jonze.
The film chronicles their rise to superstardom through archival footage and live, on-stage commentary from Mike D (Diamond) and Ad-Rock (Horovitz). That includes honoring Adam Yauch, the late third member who died from cancer in 2012.
“Adam Yauch was the driving force, the one that not only gets themselves going and doing great things, but says, ‘We should all do this,’” Horovitz remembers. “Yauch was that type of friend.”
Beastie Boys Story was originally set to premiere at the now-canceled SXSW Film Festival. The documentary will premiere in select IMAX theaters on April 2 before its April 24 streaming debut on Apple TV+.
