On the heels of the nominations for the 73rd annual primetime Emmys, the Television Critics Association announced their picks for the 2021 TCA Awards.
Netflix leads the pack with 15 nods overall, followed by HBO with 14 and HBO Max with 10. If the TCA counted platforms in the same way that the Television Academy did, which controversially combined HBO and HBO Max, HBO and HBO Max would lead with 24 total nominations.
Beyond that, Apple TV Plus landed eight nominations; Disney Plus and Showtime scored five; Hulu and NBC tied with four each; Amazon, CBS, FX, PBS Kids and Peacock tied with three each and Starz grabbed two. Bravo, Comedy Central, Disney Jr., MSNBC, Nat Geo, Paramount Plus and PBS all had one nomination.
“This was an incredible year for fresh, inclusive content and new creators, and our nominations are a reflection of that,” said Melanie McFarland, TCA president and TV critic for Salon, in a statement. “The TCA membership selected from a wealth of original offerings that broke fresh ground and presented exciting, thought-provoking experiences that redefined the television landscape. Although we will not be able to honor these landmark achievements in-person, we look forward to celebrating 37 years of the TCA Awards and sharing our top picks when the winners are unveiled.”

Nominated for Program of the Year, TCA’s top award, are Netflix’s Bridgerton and The Queen’s Gambit; HBO’s I May Destroy You and Mare of Easttown; HBO Max’s Hacks; Apple TV Plus’ Ted Lasso; Amazon’s The Underground Railroad and Disney Plus’ WandaVision. Of those shows, Ted Lasso leads the pack with five nominations overall, including nods for stars Jason Sudeikis and Hanna Waddingham in individual achievement in comedy and the show also nominated for outstanding new program and outstanding achievement in comedy.
Following Ted Lasso are I May Destroy You, Mare of Easttown, Hacks and WandaVision all tied at four nominations each. The stars of all four shows—I May Destroy You’s Michaela Coel, Mare of Easttown’s Kate Winslet, Hacks’ Jean Smart and WandaVision’s Elizabeth Olsen—are nominated for their performances, with Coel, Winslet and Olsen mentioned for individual achievement in a drama and Smart noted for individual achievement in a comedy. All four of those series are also nominated as outstanding new program along with Lasso, Bridgerton, HBO Max’s The Flight Attendant and Starz’ P-Valley
Bridgerton and P-Valley join Netflix’s The Crown, Apple TV+’s For All Mankind, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, HBO’s Lovecraft Country, Disney Plus’ The Mandalorian and FX’s Pose as nominees for outstanding achievement in drama.
Joining Coel and Winslet in the category of individual achievement in drama are Ethan Hawke for Showtime’s The Good Lord Bird, Thuso Mbedu for Amazon’s The Underground Railroad, Elizabeth Olsen for WandaVision, MJ Rodriguez for Pose, Omar Sy for Netflix’s Lupin and Anya Taylor-Joy for Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit.
On the comedy side—besides Smart, Sudeikis and Waddingham—are Bo Burnham for Netflix’s Bo Burnham: Inside; Kaley Cuoco for The Flight Attendant; Maya Erskine for Hulu’s Pen15; Renee Elise Goldsberry for Peacock’s Girls5Eva; and Charlotte Nicdao for Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest.
Nominated for outstanding achievement in movies, miniseries or specials are Bo Burnham: Inside, The Good Lord Bird, I May Destroy You, HBO Max’s It’s a Sin, Mare of Easttown, The Queen’s Gambit, The Underground Railroad and WandaVision.
