Fast-moving, dynamic and powerful, action sports seem to go hand in hand with the mobile space, and with Xbox owners in particular. But while plenty of apps have been created to present news and entertainment from the action sports world for some devices, none currently service the Windows 8 and Xbox platforms. That means 1.3 billion PCs worldwide and 67 million Xbox consoles have been missing a key way to connect to such X Games-worthy pursuits as big-wave surfing, moto and BMX racing, snowboarding and other entertainingly dangerous pursuits.

Until now. Xpreshon — available exclusively on Windows 8 and Xbox—is the brainchild of Australian developers Christian Spagnardi and Jason Webb, “who have long dreamt of having a take-anywhere action sports companion that keeps users connected and involved where ever they are,” Webb told Brief.

Due to go live in the Windows Store and Xbox App Marketplace next month, Xpreshon takes an aggregated approach to content, providing users with a vast array of action sports news, athlete and event information together with videos, full movies and live-event streaming. Viewers can either subscribe monthly to view the premium content or pay per view to rent movies or gain access to live events. As Xpreshon rolls out, Webb’s team plans to add features such as live surf and snow reports, and user judging of live events as they take place.

Already, the company has made big moves to get on the radar of the action sports media industry. This month, Xpreshon announced it would be the official umbrella sponsor of the Big Wave World Tour, which will allow the entire tour to be webcast around the world.

Xpreshon has yet to partner with any TV networks, but “TV is definitely on our roadmap of new features and we are very keen to partner with sports networks in the future,” said Webb.

The company will face challenges standing out in an already overcrowded streaming content marketplace with a lot of major players jostling for position, but it seems to have the right attitude about that situation: “Xpreshon is well aware that there is a vast army of content producers already creating, producing, shooting, editing, compiling and distributing all the content it aims to collate,” according to the company. “Further, Xpreshon is well aware that large and well-funded media organisations are already recognized as the established media channels in the Action Sports arena. Xpreshon does not aim to compete with these producers and media organisations. Xpreshon aims to partner with them and deliver their content across Xbox and Windows 8.”

Brief Take: Action sports fans are a passionate lot who tend to gather around tentpole events broadcast from the community they love. The Xbox in particular, with its young demographic of video game players, seems like an ideal platform for Xpreshon.
