Nielsen studies have shown that Hispanics are adopting smartphones at a higher rate than any other demographic group, and Telemundo has responded accordingly – particularly in its news sector. In July, the Spanish-language network produced an episode of its evening newscast Noticiero Telemundo in which all video was shot using phones and tablets. In turn, that innovative event was an extension of a push Telemundo had already been making into digital-first storytelling, with shows like The Selfie Interview and Mi Lente.

With Noticias Telemundo, a new Spanish-language app launching November 8 for iOS, Android and the Apple Watch, Telemundo is pushing its news coverage into a whole new realm of mobile engagement. “We launched our first app five years ago and have since learned a lot,” said Francisco Rivera, VP of emerging business at NBCUniversal/Telemundo. “[Noticias Telemundo] is the culmination of five years of work.”

Launched in conjunction with the one-year lead-up to Election Night 2016, Noticias Telemundo is currently the only app in the United States planning to provide real-time results on the night of the elections in Spanish. It can do this thanks to Telemundo’s partnership with its parent company’s NBC News division. “We are going to be collaborating quite a lot with NBC News and their technology department,” said Rivera. In addition, the app will be fully customizable, with features such as custom push notifications and location-based weather data. Rivera also promised “simultaneous live streams, many of which are not necessarily related to broadcast.”

Hispanic users are 1.5 times more likely to buy mobile apps and digital media than non-Hispanics, making them “digital and mobile trailblazers,” said Peter Blacker, EVP of digital media and emerging business at NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, “and studies show that they expect top-quality content delivered to them on their own terms. We understand that the content we provide to our audience needs to be personalized and customized for mobile screens and wearable devices, as Hispanics continue to embrace emerging technologies.”
