Oscar nominee Andrew Garfield (Tick Tick … Boom!) plays a devout Mormon detective in FX’s upcoming limited series Under the Banner of Heaven, based on the best-selling true crime book by Jon Krakauer.

“This case I’m working on, it’s a double murder. So far what we’ve found isn’t pointing outward. The evidence points to things and to beliefs that I’ve only ever heard whisperings about,” Pyre says in the series’ first teaser trailer. “I wonder how something so horrific could have come to pass.”

The story examines the brutal murders of a young Mormon wife and mother, Brenda (Normal People‘s Daisy Edgar-Jones) and her 15-month-old daughter.

Under the Banner of Heaven was first published in 2003 and the story went into development as a theatrical film, written by Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black (Milk), in 2011. More than a decade later, with Black still attached, the limited series will debut exclusively on Hulu later this year.

The limited series also stars Sam Worthington, Denise Gough, Wyatt Russell, Billy Howle, Gil Birmingham, Adelaide Clemens, Rory Culkin, Seth Numrich, Chloe Pirrie, Sandra Seacat and Christopher Heyerdahl.

It’s created and executive produced by Black along with Ron Howard and Anna Culp for Imagine Television; Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan of Aggregate Films; David Mackenzie, who also directs; and Gillian Berrie.
