Prime Video released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming mega-series, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and it’s filled with tantalizing glimpses of Middle Earth in the First and Second Age, thousands of years prior to the events of Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning film trilogy.
The series focuses on elf queen Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), played by Cate Blanchett in the movies, and her first battle against the shadow. Other familiar characters are elf lord Elrond (Robert Aramaya, Game of Thrones) and Isildur (Maxim Baldry), the famous ancestor of Aragon who gives him the right to become king of men.
Exactly what story the prequel plans to tell is unknown as of yet, but like House of the Dragon, it will take place long before the main story that everyone knows well. While House of the Dragon is set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, The Rings of Power takes place thousands of years earlier.
“There was a time when the world was so young, there had not yet been a sunrise. But even then, there was light,” the teaser trailer opens.
“Elves have forests to protect. Dwarves, their mines. Men, their fields of grain, but we harfoots have each other,” says a harfoot in the trailer. (Harfoots are a nomadic precursor to hobbits.)
The teaser also shows man’s legendary isle of Numenor as well as the Elven kingdom of Rivendell and a fully functional dwarven mine. But even in Middle Earth’s early days, evil loomed.
“Darkness will march over the face of the Earth. It will be the end, not just of our people, but all peoples,” says High Elven King Gil-Garad (Benjamin Walker).
Amazon shelled out almost a half-billion dollars to acquire the rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’s master works. This is the first series to come out of that deal.
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premieres September 2 on Prime Video.
