The Emmy Awards faced a lot of questions in 2014 when Netflix hit Orange is the New Black was submitted as a comedy series last year (among other strange choices).

Because of instances like that, the Television Academy on Friday announced a series of changes in the way the winners are chosen and how series can enter the Emmy Awards competition.

In the statement from the Academy, Chairman Bruce Rosenblum said: “As our growing membership creates and produces more content for ever-changing platforms, today’s changes in the rules and procedures are vital. We’re sure that in coming years we will continue to evolve our rules as our dynamic industry grows.”

The most obvious change is that, in order to reflect the massive increase in TV series production, the Emmys will now include seven nominees for Best Comedy and Best Drama, rather than the previous six.

Other changes are below:

What is a comedy? The Academy has changed the definition of a comedy show to a series clocking in at 30 minutes or less - so from here on out, only half-hour shows will be allowed to submit themselves as comedy series, anything longer than that will fall into the drama category. Any comedies that are longer than 30 minutes can petition the Academy for a category change.

Miniseries are now limited series: The previous category of Best Miniseries will now be known as Best Limited Series, where a limited series is defined as any series with two or more episodes that runs at least 150 minutes without recurring storylines or characters in later seasons.

Variety talk vs. variety sketch: The Variety Series award has been cut into two categories: Variety Talk and Variety Sketch. The talk show category will be presented at the Primetime Emmys, but Sketch will be a part of the Creative Arts Emmys. The change gives a better chance to shows like SNL or Key and Peele that have been largely ignored in the past.

Final round voting: The Academy expanded the final round of voting to anyone eligible to vote in the nominating round in order to get more voters involved with the process.

Guest actors: This category has been limited to actors appearing in less than 50 percent of a show’s episodes, affecting shows like Orange is the New Black who submitted several actresses as guest performers last year.
