ABC’s Abbott Elementary led Tuesday’s Critics Choice TV nominations for the Critics Choices Association’s 28th annual Critics Choice Awards. AMC’s concluded Better Call Saul followed with five nominations.
Starz’ Gaslit, FX’s Reservation Dogs and Paramount Plus’ The Good Fight tied with four nominations each.
Among networks and streaming services, FX, HBO and Netflix tied for the lead with 15 nominations each, followed by 14 nods for Hulu, and 10 each for Apple TV Plus and Paramount Plus. ABC and HBO Max tied with six each, with all of ABC’s for Abbott Elementary. (The Emmys and other TV awards organizations combine HBO and HBO Max, and if that had been the case here, HBO/HBO Max would have led with 21 total nominations.)
“As we embark on holding the 28th annual Critics Choice Awards, we are amazed by the wealth of remarkable television programs that were considered to become this year’s nominees,” said Critics Choice Association TV Branch Co-President Ed Martin in a statement. “Clearly, the industry has rebounded in a big way. We look forward to honoring the year’s finest shows and performances at the upcoming awards ceremony.”
Besides its nomination for best comedy series, Abbott Elementary also scored mentions for best actress in a comedy series for series creator, executive producer and star Quinta Brunson; best supporting actor in a comedy series for Chris Perfetti and Tyler James Williams; and best supporting actress in a comedy series for Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph. Brunson and Ralph both won these categories at September’s Primetime Emmy Awards.
And besides its nomination for best drama series, Better Call Saul was also nominated for best actor in a drama for star Bob Odenkirk; best supporting actor in a drama for Giancarlo Esposito; and best supporting actress in a drama for Rhea Seehorn and Carol Burnett.
Abbott Elementary will compete against HBO’s Barry; FX’s The Bear, Better Things and Reservation Dogs; CBS’ Ghosts; HBO Max’s Hacks and Hulu’s Reboot for the honor of being named best comedy.
Multiple Emmy-winner Brunson is joined in the best actress in a comedy category by Dead to Me’s Christina Applegate, The Flight Attendant’s Kaley Cuoco, Girls5eva’s Renée Elise, Reservation Dogs’ Devery Jacobs, and Hacks’ Jean Smart, who’s been awarded two Emmys for her performance as comedian Deborah Vance.
Nominations for best actor in a comedy are What We Do in the Shadows’ Matt Berry; Barry’s Bill Hader, for which he has won the Emmy twice; Reboot’s Keegan-Michael Key; Only Murders in the Building’s Steve Martin; The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White and Reservation Dogs’ D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai.
Besides Abbott Elementary’s Perfetti and Williams, nominations for best supporting actor in a comedy include Ghosts’ Brandon Scott Jones, Call Me Kat’s late Leslie Jordan, Dead to Me’s James Marsden, and Barry’s Henry Winkler, who won the Emmy in 2018 as Barry’s acting coach Gene Cousineau.
Better Call Saul faces Disney Plus’ Andor, Apple TV Plus’ Bad Sisters and Severance, Netflix’s The Crown, HBO’s Euphoria and House of the Dragon, Paramount Plus’ The Good Fight and Paramount Network’s Yellowstone for best drama series.
Odenkirk, who has been nominated for an Emmy five times for Better Call Saul, will be up against Andor’s Diego Luna, The Old Man’s Jeff Bridges, This Is Us’ Sterling K. Brown, Severance’s Adam Scott and The Boys’ Antony Starr for best actor in a drama.
Vying for best actress in a drama are The Good Fight’s Christine Baranski, Bad Sisters’ Sharon Horgan, Ozark’s Laura Linney, This Is Us’ Mandy Moore, Yellowstone’s Kelly Reilly and Euphoria’s Zendaya.
Along with Esposito, who plays Better Call Saul’s infamous Gus Fring, nominees for supporting actor in a drama are The Good Fight’s Andre Braugher, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’s Ismael Cruz Cordova, Evil’s Michael Emerson, The Old Man’s John Lithgow and House of the Dragon’s Matt Smith.
And besides Burnett and Seehorn, nominees for supporting actress in a drama are House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock, The White Lotus’ Jennifer Coolidge, who won the Emmy for this role; Ozark’s Julia Garner, who is a three-time Emmy winner for her role as Ruth Langmore; and The Good Fight’s Audra McDonald.
In addition to Gaslit, also nominated for best limited series are Hulu’s The Dropout, The Girl from Plainville and Pam & Tommy; Paramount Plus’ The Offer, HBO Max’s Station Eleven, AMC Plus’ This Is Going to Hurt and FX’s Under the Banner of Heaven.
Mentioned as best movie made for television are Hulu’s Fresh and Prey, Showtime’s Ray Donovan: The Movie, HBO’s The Survivor, Paramount Plus’ Three Months and The Roku Channel’s Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.
Nominations for best actor in those two categories are The Survivor’s Ben Foster, Under the Banner of Heaven’s Andrew Garfield, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey’s Samuel L. Jackson, Weird’s Daniel Radcliffe, Pam & Tommy’s Sebastian Stan and This is Going to Hurt’s Ben Whishaw.
Best-actress nominations in limited series or movie made for television are Inventing Anna’s Julia Garner, making her a double Critics Choice nominee; Pam & Tommy’s Lily James, Prey’s Amber Midthunder, Gaslit’s Julia Roberts, The First Lady’s Michelle Pfeiffer and The Dropout’s Amanda Seyfried, who won the Emmy for her portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes, the Silicon Valley biotech entrepreneur who has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for defrauding investors.
