Robert Kirkman, the creator of the “Walking Dead” comic book that inspired the monster hit cable series on AMC still churns out his popular graphic novel each month, even as he works as a writer on the series.

How does he find the time to balance both jobs, while still staying relatively sane?

First, he sticks to the rituals that helped guide him to success in the first place, according to Fastcocreate.

Kirkman still writes the books each month in his basement, just as he did a decade ago. Distractions such as phone calls and email are banished while he’s in the zombie zone.

He also maintains an open mind when in the writers’ room of the AMC series, letting his colleagues—and sometimes himself—“crap” on his work.

And he never forgets where he came from—namely the world of comics.

“Any day, I would rather read a comic book than watch a movie or a TV show, or read a book without pictures,” Kirkman told the site.

Brief Take: Kirkman shows that a successful creative needs to learn how to adapt their work habits to individual scenarios, but then stick religiously to the formula that works.
