Zac Efron plays John “Chickie” Donohue, a real Marine veteran who in 1967 decided to bring beer to his friends serving in Vietnam, in Apple TV Plus’ The Greatest Beer Run Ever. The film is based on the 2020 book “The Greatest Beer Run Ever: A Memoir of Friendship, Loyalty and War” by J.T. Molloy and Donohue.

The film also stars Russell Crowe, Bill Murray, Jake Picking, Will Ropp, Kyle Allen and Ruby Ashbourne Serkis. It’s directed by Peter Farrelly (Green Book), who also writes along with Brian Currie and Pete Jones. It’s produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger on behalf of Skydance, with Andrew Muscato and Jake Myers. Muscato first produced it as a short in 2015 that was released on Pabst Blue Ribbon’s YouTube channel on Veterans Day November 11, 2015.

The Greatest Beer Run Ever premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival next month and then begins streaming on Apple TV Plus and showing in select theaters September 30.
