Just like AMC’s fan favorites The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad, BBC America’s Orphan Black is getting its very own after talk show for season 4, panelists said Saturday at WonderCon in Los Angeles. After the Black will feature hosts Ajay Fry, Morgan Hoffman and Teddy Wilson—all from Innerspace— having lively discussions with the cast and special guests, as well as featuring sneak peeks of future episodes.
The 30-minute format premieres April 14 following Orphan Black‘s season 4 premiere and features Tatiana Maslany and Kevin Hanchard.
After a behind-the-scenes recap clip of the convoluted, insane, awesome first three seasons from the mouths of the cast and creators, fans were rewarded by a brief sneak peek at season 4.
Then the “Men of Orphan Black” came to the stage, with creators John Fawcett and Graeme Manson, and stars Kevin Hanchard, Kristian Bruun and Jordan Gavaris talking about what sounds like a return to some of the mysteries and format from season 1.
“We’ve created a rich backstory and mythology, where we can generate our own stories. We wanted to look back to the first season and go back to the tracks with Beth and Sarah,” said Manson. “What did Sarah miss? There’s more story there.”
“We wanted to get that feel of season 1, that feel of you don’t know who the bad guy is, you don’t know who you’re speaking to, with Sarah playing off her back foot all the time,” said Fawcett. “That was the goal.”
Fawcett also addressed how the writers create new clones.
“We don’t take new clones lightly at all. We don’t do clones of the week. We start in the writer’s room with what story function a new clone could have,” said Fawcett. “When we have an idea of what the story’s going to look like, we take the idea to Tatiana, and from there, she’ll go, ‘Are you nuts? I can’t do that.’ Then you know, she does it.”
“When conceiving the show, it was going to be a bunch of different things, a genre mash-up. A thriller, a comedy, a horror, a sci-fi,” said Fawcett. “We wanted to do all these things, and what knits it all together is the believability and emotion that Tat and the cast brings to these characters.”
For the rest of the panel, the cast and crew tiptoed around spoilers (is Delphine really dead? Can we expect more of the transgendered clone Tony?), and indulged in twerking stories. Any spare breath was spent singing Tatiana Maslany’s praises, as it should be.
Season 4 of Orphan Black premieres April 14 at 10 PM on BBC America, followed by the series premiere of After the Black.
