VH1 Classic will relaunch as MTV Classic on August 1 with MTV Hour One, with the debut replicating MTV’s first-ever hour of programming which launched exactly 35 years earlier on August 1, 1981.
The new channel will feature “an eclectic mix of fan-favorite MTV series and music programming drawn from across its rich history, with a special focus on the 1990s and early 2000s,” according to a statement from the company.
The return to the past comes as parent company Viacom has suffered falling ratings seven years in a row as younger demographics who make up the company’s core audience seek out non-traditional viewing platforms.

The programming block will kick off at 6 a.m. with The TRL Decade featuring the best of Total Request Live, followed by memorable episodes of MTV Unplugged. MTV Hour One will also stream via Facebook Live on the channel’s Facebook page.
Mondays through Thursdays from 10 p.m. - 1 a.m. will feature a three hour block of primetime programming includes shows like Daria, Beavis & Butthead, Aeon Flux, Pimp My Ride, Cribs, Jackass, Punk’d, and more.
On Fridays, MTV Classic will feature classic primetime music series like MTV Unplugged, Storytellers and live performances.
On the weekends, the network will air bingeable marathons of The Real World, Laguna Beach, Road Rules and other series.
“From Beavis & Butt-head to Laguna Beach, MTV’s programming vault is a music and pop culture goldmine with universal resonance,” said MTV president Sean Atkins.
