The 2020 BAFTA TV awards on BBC One on Friday, July 31, were full of surprises with upsets in both the drama and comedy races.
Channel 4’s Stath Lets Flats, which is available in the U.S. via HBO Max, upset awards darling Fleabag, while Fleabag co-star Sian Clifford, beat Fleabag creator and star Waller-Bridge for the award for best female performance in a comedy. Stath Lets Flats’ creator and star Jamie Dementriou won best male performance in a comedy.
Channel 4/Netflix’s The End of the F***ing World also upset Netflix’s The Crown as best drama, while Glenda Jackson won best leading actress for BBC One’s Elizabeth is Missing over last year’s Emmy winner Jodie Comer for BBC One’s Killing Eve. The End of the F***king World’s Naomi Ackie won for best supporting actress.
A more expected win was HBO/Sky Atlantic’s miniseries win for Chernobyl, which also swept the U.S. TV awards. Chernobyl’s Jared Harris also was named best lead actor, although Chernobyl’s Stellan Skarsgard was upset by Giri/Haji’s Will Sharpe in the supporting actor category.
Other entertainment wins included Mo Gilligan of Channel 4’s The Lateish Show with Mo Gilligan for best entertainment performance, and Dave’s Taskmaster for best comedy entertainment program.
BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing was best entertainment program, while Channel 4’s Leaving Neverland, which aired on HBO in the U.S., was named best factual series.
Netflix’s When We See Us won best international program, beating out HBO/Sky’s Euphoria, HBO/Sky Atlantic’s Succession and Netflix’s Unbelievable.
