Aiming to engage its next generation of fans, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club has kicked a fully interactive digital entertainment platform toward the goal of 7-10-year-old children.

“Tottenham Turfies” lets kids create their own avatar-style characters, or “Turfies,” from more than 115 million combinations, and navigate them through the virtual world of the Tottenham Hotspur Football pitch. Along the way, they can plays games such as Topsy Turfie, Training Run and Dodge ‘n’ Dribble, and use leaderboards to compete with friends, give virtual gifts and swap virtual player cards. The platform even rewards the best gamers with virtual trophies, medals and coins that can be cashed in for real-life prizes ranging from Tottenham stadium tours to Hotspur merchandise.

“Children typically make their decisions about the team they will follow for life between the ages of 7-10,” Emma Taylor, head of marketing for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, told Advanced Television. “We wanted to do something new that would engage with this audience and introduce them to the Club in an educational yet fun way.”

Brief Take: In engaging its youngest generation of fans on a mobile platform, Tottenham Hotspur is showing an admirable level of forward thinking. Children are the future, but so is mobile, and every major professional sports organization should be ramping up efforts similar to Tottenham Turfies.
