The Strain promises a future too good to be true in FX’s promo for the show’s final season:

“The Partnership will benefit every living creature on this planet. There will be no more violence, no crime.”

The thriller tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, former head of the Center for Disease Control. He and his team were called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism, as New Yorkers fight for the survival of humanity.

The fourth and final season picks up nine months after the explosion at the end of season three that triggered a global nuclear apocalypse. The world has fallen into darkness, and the strigoi are in control, now moving about in the daytime thanks to the resulting nuclear winter, with the majority of humans working for them with the understanding: collaborate or die.

The Master and his minions have created an unsettling alliance in “The Partnership.”

The majority of humans are now working for the strigoi, operating with a single understanding – collaborate or die.

“With the world in disarray and our heroes disbanded, each of them will have to overcome personal hardship and defy death for even the smallest chance at fighting back,” Showtime says. “In the face of annihilation…do our heroes have what it takes to save humankind?”

The series is based on the best-selling The Strain Trilogy by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. It hails from showrunner-executive producer-director and writer Carlton Cuse along with co-creators/executive producers Hogan and del Toro.

The Strain premieres Sunday, July 16 on FX.
