It’s been almost four months since “SNL” alum Jimmy Fallon took over “The Tonight Show,” and his ratings success, while still up there, are not quite as impressive as his initial debut.

Still, the new “Tonight Show” remains a strong ratings performer, with 34 percent gains over this time last year and a more concentrated 18-49 demographic. Meanwhile, “The Tonight Show”‘s gains seem to be lifting all ships.

Late-night competitors Jimmy Kimmel and David Letterman, airing in what’s soon to be Stephen Colbert’s timeslot, are in some ways benefitting from Fallon’s arrival. Kimmel ended May on a steady note and Letterman is slightly up from last year - also thanks in part to the announcement of his departure. Ratings are up for all three of these shows, as are second-screen and online efforts, sometimes in order to keep up with Fallon’s naturally viral strategy. “Tonight Show” had some of its most-viewed online videos recently with “Lip Sync Battle With Emma Stone” and “Will Ferrell and Chad Smith Drum-Off,” and Kimmel’s “Celebrities Read Mean Tweets” video garnered more than the rest of its previous outputs at more than 15 million views.

Brief Take: Fallon’s “Tonight Show” success has stayed somewhat consistent because of how well his sketches work online (go watch any of his lip-sync competitions now), and because he appeals to younger viewers who will find that content anywhere NBC releases it.
