In just over a year, DANIELS (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) have become “it” directors with their brand of hazy, funny and crafty short films, videos and commercials. What started with a truly explosive video for electro-pop act The Hundred in the Hands’ “Pigeons” has turned into vids for white-hot buzz bands Foster the People, Battles and Chromeo, and Video of the Year honors at the UK Music Video Awards for “Simple Math” by Manchester Orchestra. And their cheery-bright spot work for Levi’s and Weetabix will make you want to see the world through their eyes.
How would you describe your job to a nine-year-old?
I make up the funnest things I can think of and try to convince people to let me film it. THEN, it’s lots and lots of work to successfully make the funnest things. But like a good blanket fort, it’s worth the extra work.
“I am creative because…”
My brother was creative and I wanted to beat him at everything/do everything he did as a kid. Thanks Brett. – Daniel Scheinert.
I’m creative because I’m not good at anything else. I’d be a terrible businessman. Not that businessmen aren’t creative. I’m just bad at the other things they do. – Daniel Kwan
What inspires you?
Fear. I’m scared of spiders. Also I’m scared of disappointing people or not living up to my potential or wasting great opportunities. But mostly spiders are inspiring.
What is your greatest creative achievement so far?
Beavis and Butt-Head liked our music video for Battles during one of their episodes. Beavis said “I could watch this forever.” I don’t mean to brag or anything. But we pretty much made it. We peaked. It’s over.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Falling asleep in a pile on the floor with all your best friends after an accomplished day where you feel like for once you weren’t wasting your time on earth.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
Math teacher. I want to be the best freaking math teacher ever. – Scheinert
I want to design and build light fixtures. Seriously. – Kwan
What profession would you not like to do?
Personal banking customer service. Or airline customer service. Everyone hates those people. Or meter maid. Those careers are screwed from day one. – Scheinert
What is your current state of mind?
Anxious and overwhelmed. We’re not getting enough done and we’ve got too much to do. Wait holy crap. Why are we answering questions?
