We already know that summer is no longer the slow season it once was for the television industry, with more original shows than ever popping up in the channel guide. And it looks like teen shows are playing a major role in driving the growth in new series.

Vulture took a look at the current crop of teen shows on declared not only are there a lot of them out there, but the the quality have of the genre has been completely elevated in recent years.

So while “Pretty Little Liars” is still certainly top of the heap after 100 episodes, it’s got great company in “Switched at Birth” and “The Fosters” (both also on ABC Family). “Switched at Birth,” Vulture points out, has already produced more episodes than “Breaking Bad.”

Elsewhere on the dial, MTV is pumping out some quality teen drama with “Finding Carter,” about a teenage girl who realizes she was abducted and the mother she thought was her own, was actually her kidnapper.

And then there is “Degrassi,” the workhorse of the genre, which has generated a whopping 354 episodes since going on the air.

Brief Take: Gone are the days when teenage fare could survive with paint-by-numbers plots and poor acting. With teen and Millennial completely inundated with content options, teen shows have to deliver on quality if they want to survive.
