Discovery and BBC America had their turns at bat Wednesday in front of the assembled critics for the TCA summer press tour. From fan favorite “Orphan Black” to “Naked and Afraid” to “Melrose Place” (yup, you read that right…) here are 6 things we learned today about the two companies today

-Your favorite 80s and 90s stars are coming to Investigation Discovery: “Who needs Melrose Place reruns when ID has the real deal?” the network asked in their press release announcing “Heartbreakers” today, a three-part series that mixes a dose of “20/20” with a major helping of Aaron Spelling. The concept? Kevin Sorbo, Nicole Eggert, Tracey Gold, Antonio Sabato, Jr, Judd Nelson, and assorted other stars of yesteryear (we say with love) re-enact true stories of dreamboats who turned into total nightmares. In addition to the re-enactments, the series features real interviews and behind the scenes commentary with the real people from the stories. If you believe Deadline, the panel was, rather, um, interesting…

-Animal Planet is adding scripted programming this fall, with “The Whale” starring Martin Sheen. The two-hour feature film retells the story of the sinking of the whaling ship The Essex, which inspired the classic whale tale Moby Dick.

“For years, Animal Planet has chronicled the whale’s modern-day fight for survival on the Emmy-nominated series ‘Whale Wars’,” said Rick Holzman, general manager and executive vice president of Animal Planet. “‘The Whale’ takes viewers back to a time when man’s greed was in the process of decimating what had been a very plentiful species – and creating today’s need for conservation.”\

- For those that didn’t catch it in the quote above, Animal Planet’s Holtzman also got a title bump on Wednesday. Holtzman will oversee strategy and all day-to-day operations for the network. Previously, Holzman served as executive vice president of programming and scheduling for Animal Planet and Science Channel. He will continue to report to Marjorie Kaplan, group president of TLC and Animal Planet.

-“Naked and Afraid” is not about nudity, the participants insisted. It’s a show about preparation, agility, and survival. “You can’t just say I’m going to run around in the woods with no clothes on for 21 days without preparing,” said past contestant Dani Julien. Also: “A lot of guys do request larger blur spots,” said Executive Producer Jay Renfroe.

-BBC America fan favorite “Orphan Black” was renewed for a third season. The show will again get 10 episodes. And the network was armed with an array of facts that don’t have anything to do with ratings (since the series doesn’t fare so well in the Nielsens, even though everyone and their Mom seems to love it). For example: Twitter activity for the show improved by seven times from Season 1 to Season 2. “Orphan Black” was No.3 on Twitter among ad-supported cable dramas.

-BBC America has also ordered a new season of “Broadchurch,” and new series “Tatau” and “The Last Kingdom.” The first is about a group of friends who travel from London to the South Pacific and get caught up in a supernatural mystery. “The Last Kingdom” is an adaptation of the best-selling “Saxon Stories” franchise set in the year 872.
