FX boss John Landgraf told the TCA summer press tour on Monday that fan favorites “Fargo” and “Louie” were both coming back for new seasons.

But Landgraf said he didn’t think “Fargo” needed another movie star to lead the upcoming second season, a role occupied by both Billy Bob Thornton and Martin Freeman this year.

The second season will feature an all-new cast of characters, a new time period and a new “true crime” story that will unfold over the course of 10 episodes.

The decision to recast the series completely sets “Fargo” apart from another FX limited-run series “American Horror Story,” which often reuses characters from season to season, even thought the storyline changes completely.

“It’s heartbreaking given my love for the actors,” Landgraf said. “But ‘Fargo’ demands a different level of realism. We couldn’t introduce those actors as new characters.”

As for “Louie,” the seven-episode fifth season will premiere sometime in Spring 2015.

Landgraf also teased the upcoming “American Horror Show: Freak Show” by saying it has “a really different look from design and cinematography point of view” from any of the previous seasons.

“I love what I’ve read so far,” Landgraf told the critics. “Some years it’s going to be big and bright and brash and campy like ‘Coven’ is. Other years it’s going to be dark and brooding like ‘Asylum.’ I’d put ‘Freakshow’ somewhere between the two.”

Elsewhere on the FX schedule: Landgraf said that “Tyrant” has had to shift production from Israel to Turkey because of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

And the network was happy to trumpet the ratings numbers for “The Strain,” which in terms of live+3 is cable’s number one premiere of the year among adults 18-49, and the biggest drama launch in terms of total viewers in FX history.
